HUGE OLD TURKMEN PENDANT – Collectible Tumar with Secret Compartment- Old Tribal Jewelry. Turkmen (Turkoman) women love BIG jewelry, and this traditional old tumar pendant is a perfect example. This tumar is very old, collectible Turkmen tribal jewelry -not a new reproduction. It was handcrafted in Turkmenistan, Central Asia in the early 1900’s. MEASUREMENTS (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Pendant Size = 13-1/2 inches long x 12 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Weight = 2 pound + 0.3 oz (heavy). TM image library 8-4-2021. A unique form of Turkmen jewelry, the tumar was designed not only for their beauty, but also for safekeeping wishes, messages, and sacred verses in its long hollow chamber that opens. This sturdy tumar has an inverted row of adamlyks, or stylized female forms(adamlyks) spanning its lower border to celebrate femininity. Large red beads were placed for their vibrant color and to ward off the evil-eye. Long chain-dangles with bells hang below, clattering together with movement to alert admirers and scare away demons. This 3-dimensional pendant was very sturdily made and does not bend. It is in excellent condition given its age, with a rich age patina and some wear patterns – a small bird-shaped accent on one side was partially damaged, otherwise museum quality. The straps are more recent, with the traditional Turkmen configuration that supports the large pendants of Turkmenistan. The amulet-charms on the straps are old Turkmen.
