Rare Antique AMERICAN FOLK ART Figural Dancers Charm Bracelet Original
These bracelets have been reproduced in glass, and even versions in Bakelite – but this is the real thing! Its a charm bracelet with six figural dancers. Three figures are women made from a seed for the head and a larger one for the body, a painted seashell for the dress or skirt, and tiny seed beads strung on wire for the arms and legs. The men are made of a seed for head, a painted nut shell for the body, and seed beads on wire for the limbs. Theyre attached to what appears to be a brass link bracelet with a hook clasp, with an additional seed next to the hook. Appears to be handmade and handpainted. The bracelet measures 7 long. The dancing figures are 1 – 1 1/2 long. There are no markings. This is a very special piece thats in original as-found condition. It has not been cleaned or altered in any way. Please inspect the photos and use the ZOOM feature for additional information on the condition. It looks like there is some paint loss on the mens bodies, and a little perhaps on the seashell skirts. But the seeds and shells are all intact, and there are no missing limbs, or missing beads on the limbs. It’s all ready to add to your collection and enjoy! See my other listings. For more great items! Sometimes they’re tracked, but more often – they are not. _gsrx_vers_625 GS 6.9.7 (625). I have here one of two fabulous bracelets from an estate of a family that traveled to South America. I was told this bracelet was some of the items brought back. The bracelet is marked on the catch Peru 18K, 925. There are six square links. Each has 18K gold symbols showing deities or demi gods and two of the links have llamas. The gold is substantial and is done over a vertical lined textured dark back ground. The links have a slight curvature. The bracelet measures 7/8″ high and 6 3/4″ long. The condition is very good with a nice unpolished patina. This unique Peruvian gold and silver bracelet is offered with NO RESERVE. See my listings for the other gold and silver Peru jewelry items from the same estate. Up for Sale is. A Very Unique & Rare. Vintage 1960’s Old Pawn Native American. Heavy Duty Solid Sterling Silver 38-Stone Sleeping Beauty Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace. Very Heavy & Very Large (RARE). Story of The Squash Blossom Necklaces with the Naja Pendant. For thousands of years, symbols have told stories and have also served as a method to gain power over the forces and the phenomena which effect a society or a person. The inverted crescent pendant on squash-blossom necklaces, called the’Naja’ by the Navajo, is found in various design forms throughout the world cultures. As a crescent, this form goes back as far as the Paleolithic period. It is mentioned in the book of Judges as an ornament worn around the necks of camels. In the Phoenician culture, Astarte was the goddess of fertility and she was represented by the inverted crescent as well. As pendants, the inverted crescent has also been found in ancient Roman, and Crete artifacts. During the Middle Ages, the Moors rode out of the East and conquered lands in a westerly direction including eight centuries of occupation in Spain. They adopted the symbol as a bridle. Ornament, and thought the inverted crescent would protect both themselves and their horses from’the evil eye’. When the Spaniards came to South and Central America, they brought that same idea with them for the protection of their horses and of their soldiers. Thus, the Moors taught the Spanish, who taught the Mexicans, who taught the Navajo their belief systems and metallurgy. Coming from another direction in North America, the inverted crescent symbol was on various types of trade goods brought from the East coast by other Europeans. The crescent pendant was used from the early 1800’s on, by the Shawnee, Delaware, Cheyenne, Comanche and Navajo tribes, among others. However, metal work of various European influences was found in the southwest as early as the 1700’s. At this time, the Navajo were fierce warriors who more often raided but occasionally traded with their neighbors, the Plains Tribes. By the 1820’s, Southern Plains metalworkers had learned the processes of cutting, stamping and cold hammering. Much of this work was produced in German silver. German silver was a different alloy as compared with the Mexican silver, which was often used by the Navajo. Through contact with either the Spanish and/or the various Plains Tribes, the Navajo adopted the symbol of the inverted crescent for their horses. The Naja was put on the horse headstall, the front center band of the horse bridle, and later, the Naja moved into the realm of necklaces. In a 1930’s interview, “At one time, every Navajo who could afford a silver headstall had one on his horse, ” according to Grey Moustache, (a Navajo silversmith who worked the art from the late 1800’s into the 1900’s). In early 1900 photographs of Hopi dancers, the Naja can be seen as central component of beaded necklaces. The ability to work in silver, leather and other metals, allowed the Navajo to move their culture from a warrior society to more of a merchant society. Where prestige and wealth had come from raiding, it now came from herding, and various art forms. Silverworking was a very important part of this change. According to the Navajo, the symbol of the Naja is decorative, and serves no purpose either as a spiritual symbol or as a specific symbol. Yet, the Naja is held in very high esteem by the Navajo as well as other peoples. One symbol of the squash blossom can be found on ancient petroglyphs at the Saguaro National Monument in Arizona. It is believed that the flower symbol that we commonly see in necklaces was brought to the Navajo at the turn of the century, the 1800’s to the 1900’s. The blossom is represented with long petals beginning to open and a sphere attached at the base of the flower. The flower pendent is a representation of the Spanish-Mexican pomegranate and a variation of this design can be found in the motif of Granada, Spain. In the Americas, Spanish colonial gentlemen wore variations of these pomegranate flower blossoms on their shirts, capes and trousers as silver adornments. Some squash blossom necklaces that date from the 1880’s and 1890’s were made with hand-hammered Mexican silver coins, with the Naja in the same design as the Moor horse bridle pendants. Najas can be found on all sorts of necklaces, however, not all squash blossom necklaces sport Najas. And there are necklaces with both the blossoms and the Najas, as well as other design elements such as religious symbols. As time has progressed, both the squash blossoms and the Naja have developed into various designs and styles. Today, these necklaces continue to develop past the traditional silver and turquoise elements and are moving into gold, diamonds and other materials of interest and great beauty. Antique Byzantine Chain Necklace Cross Crucifix Pendant Silver Antiquity (#5975)
Antique / antiquity Byzantine chain necklace and cross pendant. Made circa 7th – 9th century. Measurements: approximately length of chain when doubled up to and not including the pendant is 12 1/4 inches (31cm). Length of the chain is therefore about 24 1/2 inches. The pendant, including the bale is a little over an inch long (a little under 3cm). Total weight is 24.3 grams. Silver broad-link chain necklace. As can be expected of about 1300 years old, the links are not entirely homogenous. Some ofthe links are’doubles’ with a pattern in dark and bright silver. Others have raised twisted patterns. Some are not adorned in any way. Please see enlarged pictures for details. There is a simple clasp on one of the links. The clasp is stiff and we did not open it in fear of damaging the necklace. The necklace is big enough to go over most people’s heads. The bale is an integral part of the cross / crucifix and not a seperate link. The front shows the (Corpus Christi)Body of Christ, as is often the case during this period, with very large hands. Folds in his robe and a halo around his head. A border of black within the actual border edge. The back has a similar black border and a smaller cross, echoing the shape of the pendant, in the center. Marks: at least one of the links (about 3 up from the bale), has a strange impression that looks almost like hieroglyphics. Whether this is a form of script or the result of time wearing away the silver is unknown. THe silver was acid tested and while we do not know the metal purity, it tested as silver. Condition: considering the age of this necklace, it is in good condition with wear commensurte with age. Please see enlarged photos for details. Do not hesitate to ask questions, which we will do our best to answer. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE. See our policies below. Add Me to Your Favorite Sellers.
