Inside case #75137 is stamped in 2 places. On mechanism: American Waltham Watch co. Watch seems to be running. I understand that the serial number is the number that is stamped on the mechanism. So this is the first number I searched in the watch database and copied below. The other number was stamped twice on the case so I copied that info also below that. I put both of the numbers info below.. My confusion is the mechanism number shows this being an open face watch. The piece that holds the horse shoe is etched on one side, and around the edge of the other, where a monogram could go. The end pieces are designed the same way. They are either gold filled or plated, and have not been tested. The hair part measures 10 3/4″ the entire piece measures 13″. Our home is smoke and pet free, but a lot of our items come from estate sales, and we don’t know what the conditions were in the homes. We also use recycled packing materials to keep the costs down, so the same applies to these materials. Antique / Vintage Victorian 19th Century Woven Human Hair Mourning Watch Chain. Circa Civil War Era / Mid 1860s. This Woven Human Hair Watch Chain Measures Approximately 15 5/8 Long. Because of the popularity of hair jewelry by the late 1850’s, many newspapers and periodicals, including Godey’s Ladys Book carried advertisements for hair jewelry — you would pick out the style you liked, and then send your or your loved ones! Hair away to be made in the style selected. It was during the 19th Century that pocket watches and watch accessories reached its height. After 1810 waistcoats became shorter, tighter, and less prominent than the coat (then called a frock-coat) which lay over them. In some cases, the vest even served as a sort of foundation garment much like a lady’s corset to cinch in a gentleman’s waist. During Queen Victoria’s reign in England, her husband, Prince Albert, was known for his slender waist which set a fashion trend. Prince Albert started a new trend in wearing watches. He liked a simple chain attached to his watch, secured to his vest through a button hole, with the excess length of the chain draping across his vest.
