Gorgeous and rare antique Georgian sterling silver, gold. & rose cut diamond Flemish Heart “Vlaams Hart” brooch. Halmarked on the reverse with Belgian silver marks. A superb and rare jewel from 18th Century. History of the Vlaams Hart. A typical jewel that was often given to the church is the Flemish heart. The exact meaning of the Flemish hearts is not known. The outspoken devotion of the people for Our Lady, mainly from Antwerp in the eighteenth and nineteenth century saw a widespread, seems to have been the basis of the Flemish hearts. The connection of the Scheldt City with the Virgin Mary as patroness manifested itself since the twelfth century. The Flemish heart consists of a heart-shaped section with a diamond core and a crown. This upper portion may be a crown or a trophy which consists of a torch, a quiver and a bow. The trophy refers to the attributes of the god of love Cupid and symbolizes the victory of love. Height (5,7 cm). Width (3,9 cm). Condition : Good antique condition with few sign of use due to the age. The needle of the clasp is missing. You can see all details on the pictures.
