This is an excellent quality reproduction of a Santo Domingo Depression Era Thunderbird Necklace. While making this piece I put a lot of effort into research so that I could make it as close to the original thing as possible. This means I tried to use as manyof the original vintage materials that would have been used by the people who originally made these type of necklaces during the 1930s-1950s. When I didn’t use actual vintage materials I used items that still would have been around in the 1930s-1950s such as native trade beads. The main modern sacrifice I chose to make was to use an epoxy glue to hold things together a little bit better. Many of the original necklaces have fallen completely apart to the point of being unwearable. Even the ones that are still in good shape are commonly missing a piece or two, and my guess is that means the piece wasn’t worn much. So, in the interest of longevity and durability I used an epoxy glue to hold the necklace pieces together so that it will last longer than the originals. I used a 6mm black plastic backer that is a very rare and expensive product called Ebonite. Ebonite (also called hard rubber). Was used for car battery cases in the depression era hence the name Battery Bird. This is the original material used for most. Santo Domingo Depression Era Thunderbird “Battery Bird” Necklaces. The white parts are made from vintage celluloid plastic. The red is made from vintage Bakelite (more correctly Catalin as colored Bakelite is called). The blue is real crushed turquoise. The beads are vintage trade beads They mostly measure 5mm but vary slightly. For a string I just used a vintage waxed string with an original vintage clasp. The binder in use, as stated above, is an epoxy glue. I constructed this necklace completely by hand. Thanks for checking out my item! If you have any questions just ask and I will respond ASAP.
